The summer seems to be flying by. Guests are coming and going as are the fish. Possibly because of the crazy weather we have had, it seems to be the year of the bass. They seem to be much more prevalent and definitely bigger than last year’s crop. Northern too are bigger. Oh, not to worry, the walleyes are out there, but illusive as always. Perhaps their illusiveness is part of their desirability. Is it the hunt that brings excitement or the actual capture? Each of the fish pictured below was caught, photographed, and carefully released.

The Bass pictured here was 19 inches.

The Northern was 38 inches.

The Walleye was 26 inches.

Life in the north woods can be seemingly a group of isolated incidents. Yet after some thought, one can often see that actually there was a natural chain of events. About two weeks ago, the electricity went out. We had not had a storm or winds, so we were puzzled about the outage. Later we found out what had happened. It seems as though a power line that had come unattached from a pole and was hanging low. An unsuspecting deer ran through the woods and into the power line. Unfortunately, the deer was electrocuted and died-hence the power outage. Then, a turkey vulture came along, saw the deer and thought he would feast on it. Unfortunately, when he touched the deer, he too was electrocuted, but in addition, his feathers caught on fire causing the grass around the area to burn. It was then that the fire department had to be called to extinguish the grass fire. One of our neighbors was heard ! to ask, “Where is the barbeque sauce”? The power was restored a couple of hours later.

A neighbor has been having an uninvited visitor. For awhile she was leaving bird seed out in a feeder which is just outside the living room window. Each evening her visitor would arrive, walk up the steps to the porch, climb up on the feeder and enjoy all of the seeds that were there. From the picture she took, we are not sure if the bear is praying, practicing a yoga position, or merely shoveling in the seeds.

Recently, we have had several inches of rain which have helped raise the level of the lakes. In addition, though we have also been plagued with high winds. We have an anemometer in the living room, that during some of the storms was measuring 60 and 65 mph gusts with sustained winds around 40mph. The upstairs of the house was doing some creaking, but there was no damage.

Because we have had rain, the flowers have been beautiful. The lupines did not last very long, but the daisies, black-eyed Susan’s, and fireweed along with the day lilies are interspersing their white, yellow, purple, and orange colors with the rich greens of the grass and trees.

We are trying to be more astute about keeping the photo page more up to date with pictures of fish that have been caught recently. Check it out at www.customcabins.com.
