So now we are almost up to date. It is now November and December. Unfortunately November is probably the dullest month of the year here. It is the month when we have the least number of sunlit days. We are not talking about the number of hours of possible daylight, but number of days when we actually have a bright sunny sky. We usually don’t have much snow, so we don’t even get a reflection from the sky to the ground to help illuminate the area. There are some days when it doesn’t appear that it ever gets really light. If you have checked out web cam at www.customcabins.com, you know what we are talking about.

The humming birds started their migration south around Labor Day, but the herons, loons, and sea gulls lingered into November. The ducks and geese have gone south as well. Many of the eagles will leave when the lakes ice in, but some do spend their winters working the falls at Prairie Portage for fish, and cleaning up carrion.

The fish along with the bears have settled in for the winter. We are past the hunting seasons of the bear, grouse, deer, and moose. The grouse are making a come back and seem to be more prevalent. This bird is cyclical and is beginning to be on an upward trend, and the bears are holding steady. The deer in Minnesota, however, seem to be running ramped, as we are sure they probably are in your area as well. There are over a million deer in the state and the herds need to be culled for the health of all of them. Over population may lead to the animals’ weakness and disease.

We would like you to take one more glance backward to last summer. There you were. You had caught enough fish for your shore lunch, built a fire and fried your delicious fresh fish along with some great potatoes. You feasted, and then took some time to sit around the fire, talk about the wonderful morning you had had, and to enjoy the view. It could happen again next summer.

Since it is November and December, it is time for us to remind you again that the deadline for the permit lottery (January 15th) is approaching more quickly than any of us would like to think about. Hence, it is time to think about making a reservation with us.

For those of you who have no idea as to what we are talking about regarding permits, we will attempt to explain. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is protected from over use by limiting the number of motorized boats and people who can enter the area. Each permit can accommodate a maximum of four boats and nine people for one day during a specified week. Because there are more people who want to enjoy the boundary waters than there are permits, motor permits then become a premium commodity. Obviously, the more applications we can submit, the better chance we have of obtaining more permits. We are not allowed to apply to the lottery on your behalf without confirmed reservations, and we are not allowed to apply for permits in our name. We can practically guarantee that there will not be any permits left after the drawing on January 15. It is not the most idealistic system, but we have to! work within its confines.
